Bathroom Remodel Begins

Upstairs Bathroom

When we first moved into our house, we knew a bathroom remodel would be a priority.  The upstairs bath was a full bath and the only full bath in the house.  This house had been occupied by renters for a few years.  The renters made an attempt to update the bathroom but it was a temporary band aid.  This bathroom had no ventilation system so the paint was peeling off the walls and the floor tiles were popping up.  We were afraid to leave this room in its present state for fear of creating a bigger problem in the future.  Enter the girl with the sledge hammer.

Demo Day

Long before I heard of Chip Gaines, I was becoming a fan of demo day.  Never knew it could be so much fun tearing something up. It must be what a dog feels like tearing up a stuff animal!  By days end, there would be no walls left in that bathroom.

Demolishing a bathroom or anything for that matter, was not something I had ever done before. As I peeled away the layers it became apparent to me that what I was exposing was history.  This was a process of home building that was an art.  The plaster was incredibly solid and all those pieces of lath!  Wow! Imagine having to nail up every single one.

In Conclusion

Our intentions never were to restore this house to its original beauty but we didn’t want to forget that we were living in an old house built in the 1800’s.  Imagine opening the door to find a completely modern interior.  We are lucky to have the option to buy new materials with a vintage flair or better yet locate old materials that can be re purposed.
